Review: My Father is a Hero

My Father is a Hero My Father is a Hero by Nishant Kaushik
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I first heard about this book, I thought this might be an emotional roller-coaster ride like one of those daily soaps and I wasn’t keen on reading it. I don’t know what got me to read this book but I have to say, I’m glad I read it.

The story is about a single father and the extent to which he can go just for the sake of his daughter. Vaibhav is the average guy, who is blessed with neither looks nor any extraordinary skills and this makes the story totally believable. Nisha is the exact opposite of her father and they both complemented each other.

The struggle of a middle-class parent,be it his constantly worrying about paying his bills or the kinds of discounts he’s looking for, is something you can’t help but relate to. The conversations between the two characters, Vaibhav and Nisha, are so endearing that right from the beginning, you cannot put the book down.None of these seem like cliches and this is one of the most beautiful things about the book.

Probably one of the most heartwarming stories I’ve come across in quite some time, the story talks about how the brilliant Nisha, who’s loved by all for her talents and her grades (teachers, as you know), goes off track and how Vaibhav deals with it. Throughout the story, there are various moments that will melt your heart. I wish the book were a bit longer and the author should have thrown some light on what happened after they returned from their vacation. I’m curious about how Vaibhav would’ve managed his finances then.

Sticking to a simple writing style and yet being able to convey all the right emotions is something you don’t see that often and kudos to Nishant Kaushik for having done that. Overall, it makes for a nice read and I’m sure it would leave you with a smile on your face. While I’m not really a fan of books being made into movies, I hope they do so, in this case. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to have a light read.
