Review: A Walk in the Rain

A Walk in the Rain A Walk in the Rain by Udai Yadla
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I, for one, am hardly interested in love stories but I was instantly glued to this book when I read the title and the storyline.

The story is about Sunny, who loses the love of his life, Sandy, when everything seemed perfect. For most part of the book, he comes across as someone who is cold-hearted and the only time he’s showing any emotion is when he is reminiscing his good old days with Sandy, who apparently left him without giving him a reason as to why she left.
He never gets over Sandy and on his birthday, his best friend Imran tries to relieve him of his misery by taking him to a brothel. As expected, he isn’t interested in the girl he was supposed to spend the night with and is lost in thoughts of Sandy. Then on his way out, a quarrel ensues which ends with Imran, his best friend getting murdered. Sunny decides to avenge his friend and he seeks the help of the prostitute in order to trace the murderer. They are hostile towards each other in the beginning and what happens next is a series of emotional conflicts and action sequences which, I feel, were interesting.

The characters in this book are complex but the author should have invested some time in properly establishing the characters. Everyone has a flashback but all of them look really rushed which make them look unconvincing. And same is the case with the story. The author seemed to be in a hurry when finishing the book because the buildup to the story wasn’t great to be honest. There’s a reason why the best authors invest a lot of time in writing the characters comprehensively. A few sequences were unnecessary and the author could have used them to build the tension. Even the narrative could have been way better given the potential of the story.

One complaint I have with the book is the editing and the errors are something that can easily be avoided. Something you shouldn’t be expecting from a book. The word “intentions” was misspelled multiple times in the book and all these should never have made it to the final draft.

Overall, the story is good. Not a book I’d recommend to a lot of people. The author does have the potential to make it big if he can improve on his narrative and working more on the characters than the story.
It’s a 2.5 for me.
