Review: The Princess of a Whorehouse: The Story of a Swamp Lotus

The Princess of a Whorehouse: The Story of a Swamp Lotus The Princess of a Whorehouse: The Story of a Swamp Lotus by Mayank Sharma
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

No matter what she does, every mother wants her child to have a great life and she'll do whatever she can in order to ensure the same. This is the theme of the story.

The story starts with Aparajita trying to get into one of the most reputed schools in Delhi which leads us to Ramya's past. After Ramya’s husband dies in an unfortunate incident, she gets cheated by her husband’s friend, who she thinks will help her in getting a job. Eventually, she ends up in a brothel along with her daughter. Ramya has only one dream - to give her daughter a quality life. Then she meets Raj and you should read the book to find what happens next.

Although it’s a very short read, I felt the author should’ve invested more time in writing about the characters. Each of the characters - Ramya, Raj, and Aparajita have been written well but they could’ve been written brilliantly. It was apparent that the characters had a lot of depth to them but these depths haven’t really been explored. Aparajita, the ambitious one with the go-getter approach; Ramya, who despite all the tragedy surrounding her life, tries her best to raise her child; Raj, a man with a social conscience; I really felt the author should’ve worked more on exploring the characters because they had a lot of potential. Also, the issue addressed is a serious and a very relevant issue but again, there should have been more on it because the end of the book should leave the reader thinking but it didn’t happen here.

The narration changing from Ramya to Aparajita was strange and I felt it would’ve been great sticking to a single point of view. The writing was really simple making it really easy to read.

Overall, the book is an okayish read and you wish it were longer. Would recommend it to anyone who’d like to have a quick read.
3 stars!
